About this trip

From Arequipa, to the great lake of Titicaca, to Cusco and hidden villages in between, this  14-day journey is an intimate encounter with Peru off-the-beaten path. Limited to only 12 passengers, our travels takes us through unusual and spectacular corners of this living earth. Alpaca is our bridge across the Altiplano and southern Andes and into a culture of weaving, creativity and reverence.

We follow the silky warm thread of spun alpaca wool through the bracing air of the high Andes, weaving together ancient knowledge and modern times. In the old wisdom ways of the Andean people, alpaca was considered a bridge between humans and Pachamama, our living earth.

As we travel we meet skilled artisans, entrepreneurs and activists. We visit IFAM textile artisans, Timoteo Ccarita and Benita Ccana, in their village of Pitumarca as well as the renowned Nilda Callañaupa at the textile cooperative she founded in Cusco. We’ll also meet lesser known experts of thread, like grandmother Santusa Cutipa, whose hands and knowledge keep the old stories alive in a small village in a far corner of the southern Andes.

We begin in Arequipa, at the base of the Misti volcano. This city of white stone is a place of delicious food, deep history and vibrant markets as well as being the world center of Alpaca wool production. From here we travel to the Colca Canyon, famous for its countless Incan terraces, hot springs, condor roosts and embroidery.  Then onward to Lake Titicaca at 12,500’. These waters are the mythical birthplace of Andean civilization and home to island cultures that are like time capsules, where no cars exist and quiet pervades. Where the finery of men’s knitting in their sacred hats is a symbol of their worthiness as mates. Where people have built floating islands of reeds to live on. Where the bold among you may choose to take a plunge in that blue water. On the altiplano we will visit small villages that live respectfully off the land around them,  and where there is a culture of alpacaboys rather than cowboys. Our travels through southern Peru follow ancient trade routes that, in the end, bring us to the historic Incan capital of Cusco, where all the creative arts of this deeply rooted land come together.

As we travel we’ll stay in a mixture of lodgings, from a 17th century mansion morphed into a hotel in historic Cusco, to a riverside hotel-spa with thatched roofs and hot springs. But perhaps the most meaningful stays will be the homestays in simple rooms hosted by heart-centered families who will receive us with a kind of care and genuine thoughtfulness that one doesn’t often encounter in our modern world.

This journey is rich with layers and depth. It is about handmade textiles, warm fibers that come from the land around, and most of all, the creative expression of humans who have always known how to listen to Pachamama to find their guidance. We greatly look forward to guiding a few of you into this land.

HIGH ALTITUDE TRAVEL

Most of our travel happens between 7,000’ and 12,500’. We will spend several days at 7,000’ allowing our bodies to get used to the thin air before heading higher. We request that you do your due diligence beforehand to be 100% certain you are physically up for travel at these elevations.

SHORT HIKES

There will be walking throughout the trip, sometimes on cobbled streets or trails. Most walks are on fairly flat terrain and will generally range between 30-90 minutes. When we visit the island of Taquile there is climbing to get to the top of the island as well as walking from place to place on the island. It is gorgeous but requires a moderate degree of physical stamina. Likewise our explorations of the cities of Arequipa and Cusco will be on foot. Easy pace, stopping from time to time. Please contact us with any questions regarding these walks.

Itinerary

Day 1- September 29
The White City

D/Arequipa  (B=Breakfast, L=Lunch, D=Dinner included in tour price)

Our journey begins in the southern Peruvian city of Arequipa* , called the White City because of the volcanic stone used to construct the colonial era buildings. Sitting  on the edge of the southern Andes and framed by three volcanoes this city is the perfect place to begin our travels. With an elevation of 7,500 feet it allows our bodies to adjust to altitude before we head into the highlands. And being on the edge of the altiplano, an ideal environment for raising alpaca and vicuna, Arequipa is at the center of production of these luscious fibers. Check into our 18th century hotel located in the heart of gorgeous old town Arequipa and plan to meet with the group at 6pm for a briefing before enjoying a delicious welcome dinner at a renowned venue.

*You will connect through Lima (LIM) to get to Arequipa (AQP). As our tour ends in Cuzco (CUZ), it works well to purchase round trip airfare to Lima from your home, and a one way ticket Lima-Arequipa and a one way ticket Cuzco-Lima.  We meet at our hotel at 6PM the evening of the 29th. Plan to depart Cusco anytime on the 12th.

My recent trip to Oaxaca was one of the best ever. Peggy Gaustad was the consummate tour planner and guide. We met artists in their studios and homes, visited a local market and a mescal plantation, and experienced art, culture, and cuisine in authentic ways. I look forward to other trips with Peggy in the near future.

This trip was informative in so many ways; In the spirit of IFAM we felt that our group contributed both materially and spiritually to the artists we met, several of whom we subsequently rendezvous with in Sante Fe for the Festival. The itinerary exceeded our expectations, from the heart of Lima to remote reaches in the Andes; Restaurants were terrific, from indigenous cooking on a bed of coals to sophisticated Lima cuisine; Accommodations were appropriate to the areas we visited; we especially enjoyed El Albergue Ollantaytambo on our extended stay to climb Machu Picchu. Andres' deep familiarity with both indigenous artists and knowledge about the political and environmental conditions they are working under helped us appreciate their works. Hillary was an enthusiastic and effective communicator and kept the group together. Overall a great experience!

The trip to Peru exceeded my expectations. My husband and I had never taken a tour before, always planning our own trips. However, this trip to visit folk artists could not have happened without our Peru tour. I did enjoy the fact that there were only 14 of us. We were able to bond as a group. Andres, our Peruvian leader, managed to book some of the top restaurants in Lima. Food in Peru is visually stunning, fresh and innovative. Andres, and our American co-leader, Hillary, worked together so beautifully. Their joy and sense of adventure was an inspiration to us all. We saw a number of archeological sights, all fascinating, but it was these two leaders who made the trip such a success. Barbara in Santa Fe A second traveller's review: I have travelled four continents and never joined a tour, until last March with Andrés Cordero and Hillary Freeman as leaders of a folk-art tour in Peru. What have I been missing all these years? Andrés and Hillary led, with deep knowledge, delightful humor and keen attention to persons, accommodations and schedule, an unveiling of Peru’s wonderful history, the life stories and studios of selected folk artists, and its towns, villages and countryside. Our 12 travelers lost whatever egos they had within two days and formed a caring community mirroring in some ways the extended families and communities we visited. With the essential guidance of Andrés and Hillary, we helped each other see, hear and understand the events of each day’s encounters. And, the encounters were amazing, day after day, for nearly three weeks. My only regret is that “Five Stars” is usually the limit when grading such occasions; this trip with Andrés and Hillary deserves “Six Stars”. Patrick F in Santa Fe, NM

PERU SPRING 2024 I understand it was IFAM’S first tour in Peru. It was also my first experience traveling with an IFAM tour. I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect so I came with an open mind and low expectations. Tour leaders, Andrés & Hillary, knocked it out of the park. My arrival started with a gracious night time welcome at the beautiful Casa República hotel in Lima and the trip blossomed from there. Peru is a sensory experience full of beauty, history, visual riches, and incredible flavors. This wasn’t a standard, crowded, tourist-filled fly by of the obvious sites; it was a deep dive into the art, cultural and political roots of Peru. From meeting artists in their homes and studios, to visiting museums and private tours led by deeply invested (in knowledge and history) curators, having a cooking lesson with local ingredients, to walking through ruins of ancient cultures with archeologists, this was a whole new level of immersion for me. I wasn’t just an observer; I was in it hands on with guided inspiration and a full heart. The restaurants and dining selections were exceptional and accommodating to those of us with different food requirements. Transportation and transfers were well organized, easy and went without a hitch. The drivers were kind, expert and generous with assistance. That isn’t to say there wasn’t traffic or backups from time to time which is to be expected. It offers a chance to get to know your travel companions better and for Andrés to share insights. There was genuine care and concern for our wellbeing as a group. If someone was taking a little longer to adapt to altitude changes or felt unwell, there was support, care and sound advice from the travel leaders. Personally? I like a little down time programmed into my tours, not only for individual exploration, but also for having a quiet time to reflect, take a breath and absorb what I’ve just experienced. We packed a lot in our days, slept hard and woke up early to do more. It was sometimes hard for me to truly appreciate all the information coming at me at once. If you are interested in Folk Arts and traditions, curious about Peruvian history and culture, and connecting with like-minded travelers while having a ton of fun, this is the trip for you.
