About this trip

Simply said, this 12-night, 13-day journey is a visit with master artisans in a spectacular country. This is deep and ancient Peru. Culture and Place. A true and intimate immersion into a vibrant land.

We will meet with the legendary activist and artisan, Nilda Callanaupa, in her village of Chinchero; Shipibo artisan, Olinda Silvano in her Lima workspace; folk potter Artemio Pomo in his family workshop. We’ll learn from the creatives at Warmichic about how they are using clothing design to counter discrimination against rural emigrant women and the designers at Amapolay who fuse present and past in their works to raise awareness of Peru’s powerful indigenous legacy. IFAM has been honored to host all of these artisans in Santa Fe!

Yet Peru is endless! We’ll dive into a hands-on retablo making workshop in Ayacucho, visit a jewelry artisan in Cuzco, see how alpaca are sheared in Patacancha, see the making of story-telling tapestries, cook up an iconic Peruvian lunch and try our hand at weaving. We will peer into the past as we explore ancient temples and ceremonial centers, learn rich stories with museum visits and fully enjoy the delights of humanity in the plazas, eateries and markets of Peru.

The setting for all this goodness could hardly be more stunning. We journey from the edge of the Pacific Ocean to mesmerizing valleys bounded by the spirit-infused peaks of the Andes. With three included internal flights, our path takes us through the colonial and bohemian neighborhoods of Lima to the ancient capital of the Inca, Cuzco; A gem among gems. We’ll explore the off-the-beaten-path cultural hub of Ayacucho and spend time in the Sacred Valley in the ancient Incan town of Ollantaytambo with its incan stonework, ancient canals and our hotel in the midst of an organic farm.

My recent trip to Oaxaca was one of the best ever. Peggy Gaustad was the consummate tour planner and guide. We met artists in their studios and homes, visited a local market and a mescal plantation, and experienced art, culture, and cuisine in authentic ways. I look forward to other trips with Peggy in the near future.

This trip was informative in so many ways; In the spirit of IFAM we felt that our group contributed both materially and spiritually to the artists we met, several of whom we subsequently rendezvous with in Sante Fe for the Festival. The itinerary exceeded our expectations, from the heart of Lima to remote reaches in the Andes; Restaurants were terrific, from indigenous cooking on a bed of coals to sophisticated Lima cuisine; Accommodations were appropriate to the areas we visited; we especially enjoyed El Albergue Ollantaytambo on our extended stay to climb Machu Picchu. Andres' deep familiarity with both indigenous artists and knowledge about the political and environmental conditions they are working under helped us appreciate their works. Hillary was an enthusiastic and effective communicator and kept the group together. Overall a great experience!

The trip to Peru exceeded my expectations. My husband and I had never taken a tour before, always planning our own trips. However, this trip to visit folk artists could not have happened without our Peru tour. I did enjoy the fact that there were only 14 of us. We were able to bond as a group. Andres, our Peruvian leader, managed to book some of the top restaurants in Lima. Food in Peru is visually stunning, fresh and innovative. Andres, and our American co-leader, Hillary, worked together so beautifully. Their joy and sense of adventure was an inspiration to us all. We saw a number of archeological sights, all fascinating, but it was these two leaders who made the trip such a success. Barbara in Santa Fe A second traveller's review: I have travelled four continents and never joined a tour, until last March with Andrés Cordero and Hillary Freeman as leaders of a folk-art tour in Peru. What have I been missing all these years? Andrés and Hillary led, with deep knowledge, delightful humor and keen attention to persons, accommodations and schedule, an unveiling of Peru’s wonderful history, the life stories and studios of selected folk artists, and its towns, villages and countryside. Our 12 travelers lost whatever egos they had within two days and formed a caring community mirroring in some ways the extended families and communities we visited. With the essential guidance of Andrés and Hillary, we helped each other see, hear and understand the events of each day’s encounters. And, the encounters were amazing, day after day, for nearly three weeks. My only regret is that “Five Stars” is usually the limit when grading such occasions; this trip with Andrés and Hillary deserves “Six Stars”. Patrick F in Santa Fe, NM

PERU SPRING 2024 I understand it was IFAM’S first tour in Peru. It was also my first experience traveling with an IFAM tour. I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect so I came with an open mind and low expectations. Tour leaders, Andrés & Hillary, knocked it out of the park. My arrival started with a gracious night time welcome at the beautiful Casa República hotel in Lima and the trip blossomed from there. Peru is a sensory experience full of beauty, history, visual riches, and incredible flavors. This wasn’t a standard, crowded, tourist-filled fly by of the obvious sites; it was a deep dive into the art, cultural and political roots of Peru. From meeting artists in their homes and studios, to visiting museums and private tours led by deeply invested (in knowledge and history) curators, having a cooking lesson with local ingredients, to walking through ruins of ancient cultures with archeologists, this was a whole new level of immersion for me. I wasn’t just an observer; I was in it hands on with guided inspiration and a full heart. The restaurants and dining selections were exceptional and accommodating to those of us with different food requirements. Transportation and transfers were well organized, easy and went without a hitch. The drivers were kind, expert and generous with assistance. That isn’t to say there wasn’t traffic or backups from time to time which is to be expected. It offers a chance to get to know your travel companions better and for Andrés to share insights. There was genuine care and concern for our wellbeing as a group. If someone was taking a little longer to adapt to altitude changes or felt unwell, there was support, care and sound advice from the travel leaders. Personally? I like a little down time programmed into my tours, not only for individual exploration, but also for having a quiet time to reflect, take a breath and absorb what I’ve just experienced. We packed a lot in our days, slept hard and woke up early to do more. It was sometimes hard for me to truly appreciate all the information coming at me at once. If you are interested in Folk Arts and traditions, curious about Peruvian history and culture, and connecting with like-minded travelers while having a ton of fun, this is the trip for you.
