About this trip

Pumas and Birds of Patagonia is one of our most comprehensive wildlife programs, aimed to discover the rich biodiversity of the remote areas of southern Chile.

During trip we will have two full days (with four sessions) to look and photograph Patagonian Pumas, in the stunning area of Torres del Paine National Park and Estancia Laguna Amarga. In addition to that, we offer a very comprehensive birding itinerary, in order to see most of the Patagonian bird specialties: from King Penguins and Andean Condors to Magellanic Plover and Magellanic Woodpecker, among several other unique species.

On this week itinerary, we will cover a variety of productive birding habitats, including wind-swept steppes, alkaline lakes and lagoons, channels and fjords, subantarctic woodlands and dramatic mountain regions, all encompassing a fascinating cast of birds and mammals.

Besides the charismatic Puma, other mammals will be possible to observe and photograph during this trip, including Guanaco, Southern Huemul, Culpeo and Chilla Foxes, Large Hairy Armadillo, Hog-nosed Skunk, Commerson’s and Peale’s Dolphins, among others.

Join us in 2023, on this fascinating journey to the dazzling regions of Chilean Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego to discover its best wildlife, traveling in a small group and enjoying the leadership and skills of our experienced guides.

Two Exceptional Birding Tours: Patagonian Steppes and Magellan Straits. Our guide, Luz Poulard, effectively communicated with us before our trip, introducing herself and asking specifically what birds we hoped to see. Her birding knowledge, English language, familiarity with both the birds and the regions, promptness and coordination with our driver were superb. My wife and I identified over 60 birds, many of which we had never seen before. I cannot give a greater endorsement for Far South Expeditions and Ms. Poulard. James. Tucson, Arizona, USA

This was a great trip and marvelous adventure. The Chilean Altiplano and Atacama Desert are, in more ways than one, breathtaking. The entire team at Far South was very professional and prompt in their communication. Our guide, Claudio Vidal, was professional, knowledgeable, and a joy to be with. We saw more than 100 birds in four days including the spectacular Peruvian Sheartail, and the Blue and Yellow Tanager, and dozens of others. Great fun. Far South is a five-star outfit all the way. Highly recommended.

Excellent trip. Well organised and as described. J-P was an excellent guide and well supported by Luis and Marciel. The accommodation was comfortable and clean with good food. The puma tracking was all I hoped it would be thanks to the hard work of the team. Highly recommended.
