About this trip

We are excited to be hosting our paddle surf retreat in Tofino, and in September, one of the best surf months of the year. Tofino is an ideal location for our camp with its numerous sand beach breaks and gentle conditions perfect for learning to paddle surf. Our camp is hosted at Rancho Tofino, a private and laid back location and steps away from one of the best surf breaks and sunset locations at Cox Bay. Cath and Zak built the Rancho for families and surfers alike with forest views from every room, a 65 inch TV for video coaching, heated floors and a wood stove. The space is spacious and provides a comfortable and warm base camp for our week of paddle surfing, yoga, and coaching. Delicious meals with local seafood and fresh baking are prepared in house and with love by Chef Jenni Bunyan. Each night our day will wrap with a shared meal around the custom wood table as we reflect on good times and our great day sharing waves.

Experience Level

This is a learn to paddle surf camp so you do not need any prior surfing experience. You do require flatwater paddling experience as this is not a learn to sup retreat. If you do have paddle surf experience this is a great week to build on that experience and challenge yourself with more intermediate surf conditions. Many people love this retreat so much they just keep coming back for the surf, community and great food.

This was my first time attending the Rancho Surf Camp and it did not disappoint!! Incredible atmosphere, amazing classmates, and top-notch instruction all wrapped up in a beautiful, world-class setting. I saw my skills and confidence improve dramatically and I've already put it in the calendar to come back next year. Thank you Norm, Andrew and Cath for a truly wonderful experience!

Norm and Tina are hands down some of the best people I have had the privilege to meet. They are conscious, attentive, knowledgeable, compassionate, and respectful leaders through and through. They do not only settle to be expedition guides but conscious on all things environmental and personal. After going on day paddles with Tina for the past year I wanted to advance my skills and challenge myself. Octopus island expedition absolutely provided that opportunity as we learned currents and tides and how to navigate safely on our boards. I learned lots about what gear to bring on a short multi day trip and we fortunately had great weather and saw spectacular marine life and beautiful night skies. Its not always about the achieving the destination but about the company you are surrounded by. Thank you Tina and Norm and I cannot wait to go on another trip with NHX.

Had a great week of all things sup surfing including instruction, video analysis, tons of water time, amazing accommodations and food, terrific guest chemistry and cohesion, super hosts and event leaders, and very evident skills progression of everyone! Thanks!

This was my third Rancho SUP surf trip and I’m considering going again next fall! It is a great environment for learning and the coaches are knowledgeable and supportive. The food is fantastic and the accommodation is very comfortable and relaxing. Being with like minded guests enriches the experience. Also a great spot for watching the sunset just across the road.

This is a great SUP surf camp for experienced Stand-Up Paddleboarders that are new to surfing or for those looking to build on their current level of SUP surf skills. The dry land and on water coaching is excellent and the video feedback is helpful to see what needs to be dialed in on the next surf session. There was an incredible amount of progression with everyone from day one and the fun group was so supportive and we shared many stories and lots of laughter. The accommodations are super comfortable and the location is close to all the surf breaks. The meals provided by Chef Brandon of West Coast Salty Buns were beyond fabulous! Lots of local fare and so delicious after a long session on the water. This is a repeat trip for many of us and it is fun to reconnect on the ocean and continue building the SUP surf skills.
