About this trip

ReStory US is an immersive experience through the US South designed to help participants know, own and write a more honest American story. Americans hold in common the aspiration for “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness” for all, and yet our widely differing past and present realities create multiple American narratives.  Too often we lack a shared story of who we are, how we got here, where we’re headed, and who we can become.

By confronting difficult histories of injustice, the ways inequity persists today, and learning from radical peacemakers from the past and the present, ReStory US draws communities into the work of repair. This journey will provide you with the tools, relationships, and inspiration to wrestle with a more complete telling of the American story. With it, we can better work to heal the racial injustice, inequality, climate and environmental crises, and political polarization that plague our nation today.

What Can I Expect?

We engage with a variety of opportunities that prompt exploration, listening, learning, and connection. These include:

  • Visits to museums and historic sites that focus on crucial aspects of our history, from slavery, to Jim Crow, to the civil rights movement.
  • Meeting with peacemakers from the civil rights leaders and movement builders to nonviolence educators. We also meet with public historians, artists, and community stakeholders.
  • Participation in a Kingian Nonviolence training.
  • Discovering the impacts of racial injustice on climate, the environment, and medicine.
  • A visit with indigenous communities in coastal Louisiana, examining the effects of climate change in their community.
  • Learning about enslaved women from Alabama who endured unethical medical experiments and helped shape modern gynecology, and how racial disparities in healthcare persist today.
  • Exploring  local culture through art and cuisine.
  • Sharing space and meals with locals from diverse communities.

Will I be able to apply what I learn in my community even if I don’t live in the South?
Through a trip with ReStory US, we come to understand how we are all connected though a history that has shaped the formation of every community in this country. As such, it gives us a holistic vision for how we might heal not only ourselves, but our communities as a whole.

We had a great time with The Telos Group! Every detail was delivered with care, intention, and excellence. Regarding logistics . . . . Our accommodations were clean and lovely. Our meals were delicious (even for those of us with dietary restrictions) and thoughtfully-local to each area we visited. Travel arrangements were on-time and spacious for our group. Regarding content and overall experience . . . WOW. Our itinerary was incredible. Loved learning from so many leaders, practitioners, experts and tour guides. Loved the variety of classroom learning, on-location learning, and walking tours. Really grateful to hear opposing points of view at times that created healthy tension for our group to wrestle through in conversation. And a lot of my own personal biases were challenged for good. My only regret is that we didn't get to be tourists for an afternoon in quaint Belfast during the Christmas season--but I also know that wasn't the point of our trip. Otherwise, I wouldn't change a thing (except to make it a day or two longer and include the Titanic Museum--in contrast to the Jeannie Johnston Boat story, and Trinity College & The Book of Kells). This was seriously one of the best trips I've ever been on. Thank you to everyone who made this experience possible!

The Telos Group does a wonderful job bringing local speakers to the traveler to hear stories and better understand the complexities in very challenging places. There is neither judgement nor bias from Telos. The experience guides us through the Principles and Practices of Peacemaking so the individual traveler is better equipped to do the work of mutual flourishing in their own communities. Highly recommend!!!

Telos set us all up for an amazing Ireland Pilgrimage. Each day of the trip was full of memorable and meaningful moments that will stay with me the rest of my life. I learned so much from the conversations, tours, shared meals and more.

This was/is a Life Critical experience. Unlearning and relearning the past and present realities of slavery and the history of civil rights leaders has opened doors to new ways to tell truth, resist evil and follow Jesus. Fantastic leaders, speakers and experiences - never to be forgotten. Thanks so much!

This was truly a unique trip full of emotional pain, learning, listening, and simply being present. I am still processing everything that I heard from Palestinians, Israeli's, and my fellow travelers. It has challenged everything that I learned about westernized christianity. My faith is strengthened and I am emboldened to speak about the war in Gaza and support for Palestinians while supporting the release of hostages. The trip itself ran very well. I enjoyed the Telos staff, our driver, tour guides etc. and their professionalism in the midst of heartbreak and pain. The food was great and I am happy that we got to support local businesses hurting due to the lack of tourism. I encourage anyone thinking about going on a Telos trip to do it! You will be blessed :)
