To make sure everything runs smoothly, we recommend that all guests arrive in Bilbao by Saturday, May 31st, to avoid any delays before the official tour kicks off on Sunday. Our adventure kicks off in the charming city of Bilbao, where you can arrive at your own leisure and settle into our wonderful hotel. We will kick things off with a drive through the stunning wine country between Bilbao and San Sebastian, making our way to one of the Basque Country’s top-notch Txakoli wineries. This crisp, effervescent white wine is the region’s pride, with its zingy acidity and bright citrus notes—it is like a glass of sunshine, and we will be sipping it in the heart of where it has made.


Next, we are off to the postcard-perfect fishing village of Getaria, where the coastal charm is as irresistible as the food. We will dive into a seafood feast that is as fresh as it gets, with dishes expertly grilled to bring out the flavors of the sea. While there, you will have time to wander the village’s charming streets, soaking in the seaside vibes, and maybe even discovering a few hidden gems.

Wednesday, June 4th-Day 4- Savoring San Sebastián: Cider, Chefs, and Culinary Delights in the Basque Hills

Take it easy this morning, as we gear up for a day of authentic Basque culture and cuisine. Around midday, we will venture into the scenic hills outside San Sebastián to visit a sidrería, a traditional Basque cider house, this one being a more modern and sophisticated version, owned by one of Chef Richard's old chef friends, with an amazing view. These sidrerías are legendary for their lively, communal atmosphere and mouthwatering food. 


When you arrive, you will start with an empty glass, but that will not last long! As we embark on a behind-the-scenes tour, the star attraction—fresh cider—is poured straight from towering wooden barrels called "kupelas" into your glass. With a spirited shout of "Txotx!" our host will open the spigot, and you'll catch the golden cider, ready to enjoy its crisp, slightly tangy flavor.

But this visit offers more than just exceptional cider; it is a full-fledged culinary adventure. Chef Chris and Chef Richard will be rolling up their sleeves and diving into the kitchen alongside our host, crafting an unforgettable feast. They are on the lookout for a few enthusiastic sous chefs, so if you have a passion for cooking or are eager to learn, now’s your opportunity to jump in and get hands-on with the masters. Today we will immerse ourselves in the rich terroir of the Rioja wine region as we dedicate a day to exploring its vinicultural wonders. Our journey begins with a visit to one of the renowned wineries, where we will indulge in a tasting of their exquisite offerings, savoring the distinctive flavors that define Rioja's wines. 


Next, we will head up into the scenic hills of Rioja to one of our all-time favorite Asadors. Asadors are a staple of Spanish culinary culture, especially here in Rioja, where the magic happens over traditional wood-fired grills. This hidden gem takes the art of grilling to new heights, focusing on simplicity, top-notch quality, and bold, smoky flavors. Every bite is a testament to their passion, from the juicy, fire-kissed meats to the perfectly charred veggies. The cozy, welcoming ambiance is the perfect backdrop for this mouthwatering experience.


Our journey through the world of wine continues with a visit to the renowned Vivanco Wine Museum. Here, we will immerse ourselves in the rich viticultural heritage of the region, exploring everything from ancient winemaking techniques to modern innovations. Next up, we will explore Vitoria, a medieval town that is a real gem—think of it as a time capsule with cobblestone streets and charming old-world vibes. You will have the freedom to wander through its enchanting alleys, snag some last-minute souvenirs, or just soak in the captivating atmosphere of this well-preserved marvel.


Upon returning to Bilbao, we will check back into our hotel for the night. To wrap up our extraordinary week, we will gather for a farewell dinner that is sure to be a celebration of all the amazing culinary and cultural experiences we have shared. It is the perfect way to toast to a week of exploration and flavor with Chef Chris and Chef Richard, as we say adiós to the Basque Country.

Chef Richard really proved his adaptability. When the original tour was cancelled, he adjusted and created a new itinerary that was made for 2. We started the tour in Zagreb which allowed us to go Plitvička Jezera National Park. It was a winter wonderland and amazing! The tour went from there to Istria region of Croatia to Ljubljana Slovenia. Other highlights include truffle hunting with a dog with a black & white truffle tasting, wine tasting and olive oil tasting, a visit to Pula and the Roman Arena, cooking lessons, and many delicious meals from simple (burek, pizza, meat plates) to Michelin-rated restaurants, including Grič. The tour was well organized and felt special. I hope to take another tour in the future.

I thoroughly enjoyed this trip. The food, wine, activities, cities, and sites we visited in Basque Country were all outstanding. Everything had been extremely well planned, and the organization to mobilize our rather large group of 38 went off smoothly. I appreciate all of that. Tour leader/s Richard and Jenny were familiar with our itinerary and helpful in all ways. Some meals were excessive for me, personally, but that's a small "complaint." This was a luxury trip on all levels for me, and I had a wonderful time.

Absolute banger of a tour! This was our second trip with Chef Richard and Chef Ricky Moore of Saltbox Seafood Joint fame and have to say that this trip was EXACTLY what we needed to ring in 2025! Before signing up for this trip we, as dumb Americans, would have been able to tell you exactly and precisely nothing about northern Spain. We now can not only pronounce Bilbao correctly, we also know what an incredible city it is and how close it is to some of the most magical mountainous scenery we’ve ever seen. I’m fairly convinced that it is this region of Spain where jigsaw puzzles are born, it’s that scenic. Chef Richard put together an exceptional trip!

What a trip! Richard created an amazing itinerary that included something for everyone. His connections to local chefs, farmers, tour guides, etc made this an unforgettable trip.
