About this trip

The capital of Spain's Andalusia region, Seville, is our home base for this culturally immersive retreat.  Home to flamenco, Moorish architecture, and mixture of Christian, Jewish, and Muslim heritage, Seville is packed full of fascinating history.

Our retreat home is a former royal palace (yes, it is as wonderful as it sounds) in the lap of luxury.  We will explore the history & gastronomy of the southern region of Spain (oh, the tapas...) while also immersing ourselves in the culture.

We'll stand in awe at the Alcazar, the oldest royal palace still in use in Europe.  We'll step into the largest gothic cathedral in the world.  We'll visit bodegas (wineries) where we will taste the country's famed wine & then follow it with more tapas than our bellies can handle.  We'll stroll the Christmas Markets of Seville, tasting the sweet holiday treats along the way.  We'll head into the countryside for memories with new friends.

There's something about all 5 senses being engaged. Taking in the smells & the sights. Feeling the ancient roads under your feet, hearing the clank of the cup meeting the saucer as locals savor their morning cafe con leche.  And the tastes... we'll fill our bellies (and our souls) with the cuisine of this sun-drenched region.

We will come home filled.
With experiences, with the love of a culture, with new friends, and with a renewed sense of self.

Welcome to Illuminare.

Illuminare Retreats (named after the Italian word for "to light up") provide a curated & immersive travel experience for women from all walks of life.  In the company of new friends, you'll find time to relax & recharge - while also being inspired & renewing your sense of adventure.  Europe has a beautiful way of getting down deep into your soul & stirring alive passions you forgot were there.   Of reigniting ideas & bringing a new perspective to our lives.

Illuminare is an Italian word that means to illuminate; to light up. That's exactly how I want you to feel during an Illuminare Retreat. Like the light inside yourself has been flicked back on. Reconnecting with yourself, your passions & interests - all while being pampered in a beautiful setting. These retreats were born out of a love of crafting once-in-a-lifetime style experiences abroad for women.

Puglia 2024 This most elegant and luxurious trip began with arriving at the Masseria Pistola, a grand restored flower farm. We were greeted with a glass of champagne by our hostess Amanda and were immediately immersed into a lush expansive garden. The gardens were one of my many favorite experiences In Puglia. The area is rich in history and tradition and we were so honored to experience many of these traditions with our hostess Amanda. She curated experiences with the farms' own botanist, a local winemaker, several trips into the quaint towns of Puglia, many nestled in the rocky coastline of the Adriatic Sea and so much more! The food was like none I have ever tasted and wine at every meal! One of my favorites was the exceptional attention each guest received. As we arrived back at our rooms each night, Amanda had placed a special gift along with a note from the day- all to help each guest feel rejuvenated and rested. It worked! I’ve known Amanda for most of her life. To be able to experience one of her uniquely and personally curated trips for women was an honor. Yes, it was the trip of a lifetime, but it was only the beginning for me. I’ll be back for more.! Thank you Amanda for your love and paasionate care for all the women you serve!

This is the third Illuminare retreat I’ve attended with Amanda. Amanda painstakingly researches each retreat and finds unique, charming, off the beaten path lodging and experiences suited for the location. The Paris retreat was a trip of a lifetime for me and I cannot be more grateful to Amanda for planning. Looking forward to attending many more retreats!

My experience with Illuminare in Puglia, Italy, was nothing short of transformative. From the moment I arrived, I felt embraced by an atmosphere of warmth, serenity, and genuine care that far exceeded my expectations. This retreat was more than just a vacation; it was a soul-nourishing journey that helped me grow. The beauty of Puglia set the perfect backdrop and every detail was meticulously curated to create an environment that encouraged relaxation and self-discovery. Amanda was the heart and soul of the experience. Amanda’s thoughtful planning and heartfelt presence made every moment feel special. Her recommendations and personal touches showed how deeply she cared about our well-being and growth. Whether it was the delicious meals crafted by our private chef or the bursts of laughter shared with friends, everything gave an atmosphere of genuine connection and self-care. The small touches made all the difference—from the comprehensive travel guide to the welcoming Facebook group that helped us bond even before we met in person to the special wine from Amanda's own vines... These details, though subtle, created a seamless and comforting experience that felt personalized and heartfelt. This retreat wasn’t just a getaway; it was a beautiful, fulfilling environment where I felt seen, supported, and inspired. I left Puglia with a heart full of gratitude, a renewed sense of self, and memories that I will cherish forever. If you ever have the opportunity to join an Illuminare Retreat, do not hesitate. It’s more than a trip—it’s an experience that will take you places both inside and out.

Thank you for the lovely curated week, I really enjoyed meeting you and the other women on the trip. I’ve always loved Florence, and it was such a pleasure to be back with good company. It was a good balance of down time and touring. Loved the fact there was a photographer for the trip. Excellent restaurant selections! Leaving off one star because of accommodations. The housing accommodation was, well, spartan. I was led to believe we were going to be pampered. I expected a cozy hotel or a staffed retreat house. I did not expect an Air B&B. Don’t get me wrong, the view was fantastic, but the eyes just make up one part of the experience. 1. There was no housekeeping, my bed was not made every day and my room tidied. I don’t feel like I’m on vacation when I still have to make my bed and tidy the room. There wasn’t even a trash can in my room. 2. Sharing a bathroom with four women. 😳 I was expecting my own en suite bathroom to be shared with a roommate. It should have been disclosed that this wasn’t an option for everyone. I didn’t even think to ask because the last time I had to share a bathroom with that many strangers was when I was staying in a hostel as a teenager in Poland. Also, if I had known I would have brought shower shoes and a bathrobe. 3. The bedrooms were not comfortable. There was no place to retreat to for quiet time. No chair in the room or desk for writing. 4. Hardly any linen. We had one bath towel, one hand towel and one washcloth for the whole week. This is just gross. Again, laundry is something I avoid on vacation because, vacation. Also, we didn’t have regular hand towels in any of the bathrooms. And I had to steal a kitchen towel to use as a bathmat, otherwise there was wet slippery marble tile. 5. The bathroom was not cleaned all week. There were poop stains in the toilet multiple times (not mine) that I cleaned with toilet brush. I had to clean out hair accumulation (again not mine) in the shower. 🤮 I also restocked the toilet paper a few times in our bathroom, apparently no one replaces the last roll. Again, I’m on vacation. Why? 6. I didn’t like the fact that we didn’t have a front desk to monitor comings and goings. A couple times I tried to read in the living room and just spent the whole time getting up and down to get the door. 7. The kitchen situation. If there was staff making coffee and catering, a kitchen is nice. But I felt like I was in college again, not in a good way. Open food containers on the counter all week. 8. I don’t like sorting trash on vacation. I touched way too much trash on this vacation. Overflowing trash bins aren’t appealing. I don’t know if I would attend another retreat if they have similar accommodations. However, would definitely recommend otherwise. Per your response on Feb 5: Again, the planned trip excursions were lovely, which is why I rated four stars. But my experience was not the restorative experience I expected because of the issues I pointed out. For me, a clean space is really important for my mental peace and well-being. I appreciate your perspective, that some of these issue could have been resolved if I talked to you. I didn’t feel like I needed to verbally point most of these things out, to me they seemed like obvious points of hospitality, but it appears my standards are higher. I understand now our priorities in this area don't quite align. As for living like a local, I had every other day housekeeping when I lived in Italy, and my own bathroom. Also, none of the things I mentioned were included in the “what to expect,” and “what is not included”as you indicated. I have screenshots of all these descriptions. It looks like a person can have very different expectations based on your descriptions of accommodations for your Florence trip, and they need significant clarification.

I’m so glad to hear you enjoyed your curated week with us exploring Florence & connecting with the other ladies within your group! So glad to hear you loved having a photographer and the restaurants selected. I hope you also enjoyed the other treats like the wine tours in Tuscany, private opera concerts, cooking class, private artisan tour, and the many surprise gifts along the way!

I am disheartened to read your review of our retreat home. Primarily because none of this was brought to me during the retreat itself for me to address and help with in real time. This is not the first time we’ve used this specific location & our previous guests loved their time there so much that most of them have since signed up for another retreat following that one. Many of the issues you mention could have been easily resolved had the been communicated to me during the retreat. For instance, one of your fellow travelers asked for more towels & I got more to her straight away. Same goes for not having a bathmat for instance - I could have remedied that quickly had I known. I only wish your concerns would have been brought to me on the ground to be resolved in the best way I could & ensure you had a lovely experience all the way around. Our retreats are intentionally held in a house-type setting versus a hotel to help foster community, late night conversations among friends new & old, and to soak in an experience that is authentic to the area we are visiting. The goal is to be less “tourists” and more “locals” for the week.

I mention this across my website, but each retreat is not created alike. This is done intentionally; so our traveler friends have various options on both location, accommodation styles, “speed” of the trip (fast paced verses relaxing), and price point. You’ll always find staffing information in the “What’s Included” section as well as the link when actually registering. While I do offer some retreats with a full staff (it seems that’s what you were hoping for) this was not one of them (no staff or housekeeping were listed in the retreat description) and the price point reflected that. It was also stated that we are staying as a group in an apartment - not a hotel. A sharing of spaces comes with that (for every retreat) and is a central focus/theme of our retreat model.
Thank you for your candor & I will certainly take into account your experience moving forward. I wish you the best in your future travels & hope you walked away from your time in Florence with many beautiful memories.

This trip was a dream come true. I needed time for myself, to not have to control or plan anything for a week and this trip delivered. Every single detail was above everything I could've imagined. The group activities, towns visited, food, conversations and free time was simply perfection. Amanda's vision and attention to detail make the difference. She makes you feel welcomed, at ease with who you are and understands why we, as women, need this time to pamper ourselves. I have travelled to many places and have a lot of beautiful memories from my trips but this one, I have to say has been my favorite so far. I will be back to her Retreats because it was an amazing experience. Don't overthink and if you see availability in any Illuminare Retreats go for it.

Dagmar! You were SUCH a delight to meet. I'm still not over how serendipitous it was that you (& Frances!) ended up there. Such beautiful timing & it was meant to be. I have now completed my fifth Illuminare Retreat with Amanda and I already have plans to sign up for more. It is evident in her attention to details that she really cares about her attendees and goes above and beyond to provide the best curated experiences for all the women. The retreat homes have been breathtaking. The restaurants and food selections (with generous amounts of wine) have been delicious. The tours have been engaging. The surprises each day kept me guessing what she had up her sleeve for us. It's so nice to turn off planning mode and trust that I will be taken care of, eat great food, be treated to unexpected experiences, and above all, have wonderful conversations and connections with other women I will carry with me for a long time to come! Thanks again Amanda! Until my next retreat with you! :)
