Full-Day Sonargaon Heritage Tour: History, Art, and Traditional Life

Discover the essence of Bangladesh's rich history and culture on this immersive full-day tour, featuring a visit to ancient landmarks, a riverboat journey, and a glimpse into rural life.

Tour Itinerary:

Hotel Pickup and Departure for Sonargaon

Start your adventure with a comfortable air-conditioned vehicle pickup from your Dhaka hotel at 8:00 AM. Set off for the historic region of Sonargaon, an ancient capital of Bengal known for its rich history and architectural marvels.

Goaldi Mosque

Your first stop is the Goaldi Mosque, a modest yet significant relic from the 16th century, built during the Bengal Sultanate period. This small but well-preserved mosque showcases the simple yet elegant Islamic architecture of the era. Explore the mosque and learn about its historical significance from your guide.

Panam City (Panam Nagar)

Next, visit Panam City, a once-thriving merchant town with beautifully preserved 18th-century buildings. The streets of Panam are lined with grand homes, blending European and Mughal architectural styles. As you walk through this ghost town, imagine its bustling past and admire the intricate brickwork and ornate designs that remain.

Folk Art and Crafts Museum

Continue to the Folk Art and Crafts Museum, which houses a collection of traditional Bangladeshi art, textiles, pottery, and wood carvings. Learn about the rich artistic traditions of the region and the role these crafts have played in Bangladeshi culture over the centuries.

Lunch Break

Take a break for a traditional Bangladeshi lunch at a local restaurant, where you can enjoy dishes like spicy biryani, fish curry, and locally made sweets.

Sonargaon (The Old Capital of Bengal)

After lunch, explore the historic town of Sonargaon, once the vibrant capital of Bengal. Stroll through the ancient streets and explore the remnants of this historic city, rich in tales of trade, politics, and culture from the Mughal and British colonial periods.

Riverboat Ride on the Meghna River

Head to the Meghna River, one of the largest rivers in Bangladesh, for a scenic boat ride. Hop aboard a traditional country boat and embark on a peaceful journey to a char, a small river island.

Visit a Char (River Island) and Experience Rural Life

Arrive at the char, where you’ll have the unique opportunity to experience the traditional rural lifestyle of local farmers. Walk through the island's agricultural fields, observe farmers at work, and engage with the local community to learn about their daily routines and farming techniques.

Return Boat Ride and Journey Back to Dhaka

After your visit to the char, enjoy a peaceful boat ride back to the mainland. The beauty of the surrounding landscape, coupled with the simplicity of rural life, creates an unforgettable experience.

Return to Dhaka & Hotel Drop-off

Arrive back in Dhaka by evening, where your driver will drop you off at your hotel or preferred location. Reflect on the day's memorable experiences, from exploring historical sites to connecting with local communities.

The boat tour through the canals was fabulous, seeing the real Bangkok from the water gave an insight into the city away from the more touristy side. Also approaching the giant sitting Buddha from the water was spectacular. Great guide and organisation. Would highly recommend.

We had a great time, our tour guide was very informative and she went ‘the extra mile’ by arranging to rent 2 pairs of ‘elephant pants’ for us to wear so that we were permitted to enter the Grand Palace (long trousers are strictly enforced).

We had a wonderful time touring the Ayutthaya temple area with our private guide, Aey. This was actually our 3rd visit to Bangkok and tour with Aey. She's almost like family now! Aey met us at the airport with a gift of local sweets. Aey then provided a full day of touring that was tailored to our needs and desires. We were able to not just view the sights, but also to take part in local buddhist traditions, including the draping of the Buddhas with holy cloth and placing of offerings. Aey also took photos along the way so that we could enjoy the day without worrying about capturing memories. What a wonderful day! Tip for fellow travelers: Please NEVER ride elephants or go to elephant shows. The elephants are tortured as babies and then endure a life of torture to support these industries. I mention this as this tour provider offered these services. I'm hopeful that enough negative feedback on this point will cause this practice to cease. If you want to see elephants, consider a day at Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai, or similar park where the elephants are never in chains, ropes, or the like and permitted to live in social clusters and roam relatively free. For more info, see the movie "Love and Bananas" or research Lek Chailert online...remarkable woman.
