Horses

Horse breeds on safari range from Thoroughbreds to Boerperd (a South African breed) to Percheron crosses, along with a variety of mixes. Horses are selected based on their good temperament in the bush and stamina for long days covering distance during safaris. The horses have been exposed to all the wildlife seen on safari and are comfortable in this environment.

Riding

Intermediate to Advanced

These trips are for intermediate to advanced riders. Riders should be comfortable spending long hours in the saddle and at all paces. Riders should be able to rise in the trot and canter. Horses are schooled English-style, and are used to contact in the trot and canter.

Tack

Riders will be in English tack (general purpose saddles)

Terrain

Terrain consists of open, grassy plains, hills, rocky outcrops, rivers, and mountains. Enjoy exploring the differing topography of the area: open bush, wooded riverine areas, wetlands, and strange rock formations home to large baobabs.

Riding Safari

Since the horses are not situated right at the lodge; you will be transported daily to the horse for your rides by shuttle. Ride length will be weather dependent. In summers, rides will be during early mornings and late afternoons. In winter, rides are only restricted by meal times. On average rides last for 2-3 hours at a time depending on game sightings. Please know you can take a break from the saddle to go on a vehicle game drive, which is also a great alternative for non-riding guests.

I had a wonderful time. Our driver and guide were very knowledgeable and took their time explaining the sites we visited and saw along the way. There was so much packed into one day I think I would have skipped Seal Island and spent a bit longer at some of the other sites.

Thank you Nancy! There are truly so many amazing things to do in Cape Town, it's hard to fit it into one day! I'm glad you had a wonderful time, and hope you travel again with us next time!

**** Awesome Adventure. Oliver of Flower Hill Equestrian Center was the perfect host, manager, and trainer for us to get up to speed! His horses were not only beautiful but world class jumpers and brave! I can not say enough about his operation and him as a person. He made it fun! Alicia Bertone
