South Africa boasts a rich tapestry of cultures and geography, but that richness was for decades overshadowed by the persistence of systemic inequity and injustice. Only in the past 30 years, after the end of apartheid and the conclusion of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, has it begun to emerge and chart a new path forward for all of its citizens.
For many, South Africa is an embodiment of the possibility of growth. What can we learn about justice, conflict, and reconciliation from the rainbow nation? What challenges and inequities persist in South Africa, or have failed to be addressed? Can we truly “resolve” a conflict, or must it be transformed entirely?
Telos hopes to build sustained programming in South Africa and the region, including regular, immersive peacemaking experiences. Ethically creating such experiences requires building long-term local and international partnerships—bringing people and resources in ways that benefit local communities themselves.
On this scouting trip, we will share an intense and varied journey into the peoples, stories, realities, and beauty of South Africa. We will engage everyone from entrepreneurs to activists to faith leaders to everyday people with extraordinary stories. We’ll also sample South Africa’s extraordinary culinary culture, arts, and stunning natural beauty.
As this is a scouting trip, the schedule will be fluid—and often packed. Many of the people we will be meeting we will encounter for the first time together. We’re sure to have some logistical snafus and some experiences that don’t resonate quite as deeply as others. Thank you for your trust and openness to participate in this experiment! We look forward to seeing you soon!
