About this trip

 Language through Culture in Oaxaca

January 15-23, 2025

Your Guide: Mimi Marchev

Oaxaca is a vibrant medley of flavors, colors, and traditions that immerse travelers in the heart of Mexican culture. Seated high within the Sierra Madre mountain range, Oaxaca city, a designated UNESCO World Heritage site, captivates with its colonial architecture, bustling markets, and welcoming atmosphere. Cobblestone streets wind through the historic center, where ornate churches stand alongside lively plazas. Beyond the city's confines, the landscape unfolds into a mosaic of arid valleys, agave fields, and mountainous indigenous villages, each contributing to Oaxaca's rich cultural tapestry.

Central to the allure of Oaxaca is its culinary scene, deeply rooted in centuries-old traditions and revered as one of Mexico's gastronomic capitals. Known as “The Land of the Seven Moles”, Oaxaca’s cooking history originates from its strong indigenous roots; notably from the Zapotec and Mixtec people, which continues to thrive today. Many of Oaxaca’s most popular dishes, including mole, tamales in banana leaves, and tlayudas are from these traditions. Food is not merely sustenance here; it is an expression of heritage, identity, and community. Markets overflow with fresh produce, aromatic herbs and spices, simmering moles and tamales and handmade tortillas, inviting visitors to embark on a sensory journey of culinary treasures.

What truly sets Oaxaca apart is the warmth and hospitality of its people. From the bustling markets to the quaint neighborhood eateries to the high end restaurants, locals eagerly share their culinary traditions and stories, inviting visitors to sample new food, ask questions, and linger over a lovingly prepared meal . You’ll be encouraged to strike up conversations with local Oaxacans, learning more about indigenous ingredients, farming practices, and the history of agriculture in the region.

Traveling can be stressful, but we take the worry out of travel by handling all the hard bits for you. We do the planning, book the hotels, and reserve your restaurant. We know the villages to visit, the vineyards to tour, and the cooking classes to attend. We set all this up for you. Then we make your trip easy. First we pick you up at the airport in a small van and whisk you to your hotel. We travel with you from place to place, from activity to activity, and finally deliver you back to the airport for your flight home.

Thank you to Bob, Don and Betsy! Thank you to fellow travelers all. There is not one who did not enrich my experience with their company. "Enrichment" is the word, too, for every day along the Camino and every evening spent in good company with excellent food and wine before retiring to a comfortable bed. Every place we lodged was impeccably clean and welcoming and sometimes a breathtaking surprise for charm and living history. I had no particular expectations and joined on a whim. I returned refreshed in body and soul from the days of being outdoors both in quiet walking contemplation and in companionship with encouraging new friends.

It was the perfect balance of freedom and guidance to explore. We felt completely supported as we walked through medieval villages, and rolling fields of grapes, olive trees, and sunflowers. We loved getting to know our fellow travelers as we walked, and shared delicious meals and wine. Even the weather cooperated perfectly. Now we just have to decide which of their many trips to sigh up for next.

Thanks to Bob, Don and Betsy for a fabulous trip! We had the BEST group of travelers, delicious meals and very comfortable accommodations. Each evening was different and delightful! I was so fortunate to have our 2 daughters traveling with me on this great adventure. So satisfying in every way. The really special aspect was being able to walk, be in my thoughts, not worry about making any arrangements and enjoy the companionship of a lovely group if pilgrims. A trip of a lifetime! Thank you!!!
