About this trip

The Black Forest is a mountainous region in southwest Germany, bordering France. Known for its dense, evergreen forests and picturesque villages, it is often associated with the Brothers Grimm fairy tales. It's renowned for its spas and the cuckoo clocks produced in the region since the 1700s. The region’s largest town, Freiburg, is filled with Gothic buildings and surrounded by vineyards.

Steeped in mystery and myth, the Black Forest is a place in Baden-Württemberg that so many Germans choose when they vacation in their own country. It is a bucket-list destination in Germany, with its inspirational medieval castles and charming villages set against dramatic lakes or mountains covered in thick coniferous forests, the Schwarzwald always answers to calls for adventure. After all, it’s Germany’s largest nature park.

Beyond the picturesque mountain trails, you can hunt for an authentic Black Forest treasure like a cuckoo clock or traditional wooden doll in Schönwald. After souvenir hunting, settle down for a slice of an original Black Forest gateau in Triberg. A pint at a canalside beer garden in Freiburg is sure to evoke memories, too.

The Vosges mountains staddle the regions of Lorraine and Alsace in north-eastern France, close to where France meets Luxembourg, Germany and Switzerland. Its an unspoilt, undiscovered corner of France to cycle.

The High Vosges (Massif des Hautes Vosges) reaches peaks of up to 1400m. It's a sparsely populated area, with an abundance of natural beauty, and its peaceful and quiet roads make it an ideal region for active holidays in both winter and summer.

In the Massif des Vosges, you'll find soft round forms ('ballons') that characterise the landscape, with valleys, pine forests and lakes on gentle slopes of the Lorraine side, and steeper terrain on the Alsatian side, where you'll also find vineyards and traditional timber-framed buildings in villages and towns both large and small

Accommodation & Food

This is a small hotel/B&B based holiday. Prices are based on sharing in twin rooms.
Single Supplement for this tour is £450. If opting to share, this must be with a friend or partner. If no one else is prepared to share with someone wanting a twin room, then the single supplement is payable. Ideally you should sign up with a friend to enable you to share a twin room. ACT is reluctant to allow strangers to share a twin room.

The Route

Obviously I have to do the reccy yet, but the idea is to fly into Strasbourg, and cycle into, then south through the Black Forest.

There are lots of small villages and towns, seeped in history, nestled in the woodlands.

Cycling into and staying in Frieburg, then west into the Vouges, and north, back to Strasbourg.

Its a beautiful and peaceful part of the world.

We had a great trip. The scenery was amazing, the routes were well thought out, the accommodations and food were fantastic. Martyn did a great job with all the logistics and it made it easy to just show up and ride.

This was a wonderful trip and the cycling was fab along excellent roads through beautiful landscapes. The trip was very well organised by Martyn and his choices of hotels was spot on. Many thanks to his assistants Ann and John, and I can't recommend enough this tour and all the others organised by Martyn and Act Tours. Simply the best.

Great cycling in Spain. Routes offered an enjoyable, fun window on the region ( despite the weather at times). Group had cohesion and provided many moments of fun/laughter/support. Van support was first class. I enjoyed the second night in hotel as a variation on normal tour design. Tour leader: excellent as ever with his logistics skills, ability to overcome the inevitable hiccups and the product he has produced. The proof is 5 cyclists from USA that think ACT the best and book up for more tours

Really good adventure. Shame weather made some of the trails slippery as would have been doable in the dry. Good food and good company - overall another excellent tour by Martyn.
