About this trip

The Copper Canyon region - larger, and four of the canyons in it are deeper than the Grand Canyon in Arizona has been inhabited by the indigenous Tarahumara, "the running people", for over 500 years. They are extraordinary endurance athletes, and routinely run 200-250 miles in one session, barefoot, or in their deerskin sandals.

We could spend weeks exploring this vast area, it is so mesmerizing, but we can get a very good idea of it on this 9 night adventure, concentrating, as usual on Nature, and developing community - a perfect place to do so!

We begin in the town of Los Mochis where we will meet for a Welcome Dinner at our hotel. The next morning, we'll take a van 1.5 hours up into the mountains to the beautiful Colonial town of El Fuerte, where we'll spend the day exploring, and one night. Our hotel was once a majestic mansion where the young Diego de la Vega was born, alias '' El Zorro ". We  may even experience thousands of bats emerging from the masonry of the museum nearby at dusk as they begin their nightly search for an insect dinner. For hundreds of  years, El Fuerte was the hub of all of the silver and gold mining trade in the area. Perched next to the Rio Fuerte which supplies the water for the vast agricultural areas in the coastal plain, El Fuerte is our gateway to the Copper Canyon.

I had a wonderful time, the mix of culture and history was perfect. People in the group was kind and helpful. The trip had the right balance free time and activities. Group leaders and guides were knowledgeable. I did miss swimming either sea lions but I understand it was beyond control as weather has the right of way.

A great Introduction to the history, culture, geography and biodiversity of the area. Road trips to museums, a boat trip around the islands, an overnight stay (glamping) at a lovely beach, and a brief tour of the city of La Paz were all enjoyable and educational. Lots of good food, especially fresh fish and seafood , and a comfortable hotel with good service added to the pleasure. Good leadership and a congenial group of travelers made for interesting conversations. There was also unstructured time for being alone or with one or more companions.

Dear Ana, It was a great pleasure to have you with us! We so appreciated your resilience during the unexpected and abnormally gusty days, and are happy you enjoyed our getaway. Hope to see you again!

It was a most amazing adventure. Well planned and very representative of Botswana and Africa. Our guides were exceptional and the support staff were awesome! I highly recommend this tour to anyone wishing to experience the "real african safari experience".

It was a wonderful trip. I especially enjoyed the boat trip to Isla Espiritu Santo. The glamping night was different and very nice too. Deborah & Miguel were knowledgeable guides and made the trip very much fun.
