Destination Vietnam

Vietnam is a land of contrasts, where ancient traditions meet modern cities, and breathtaking natural landscapes coexist with vibrant cultural heritage. Whether you are drawn to its bustling cities, tranquil countryside, or pristine beaches, Vietnam offers something for every type of traveler. From the north’s misty mountains to the southern Mekong Delta, this Southeast Asian gem is a must-visit destination for those seeking a unique and enriching experience.

The Bustling Cities: Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City

Vietnam’s two largest cities, Hanoi in the north and Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) in the south, offer a captivating mix of the old and the new. Hanoi, the capital, is a city steeped in history and tradition. Its Old Quarter, with narrow streets and bustling markets, is a sensory overload of colors, sounds, and smells. Here, you can visit ancient temples, colonial architecture, and Hoan Kiem Lake, where locals practice tai chi at dawn.

Ho Chi Minh City, by contrast, pulses with modern energy. This city is the economic hub of Vietnam and is known for its dynamic pace, modern skyscrapers, and rich history. The War Remnants Museum and Cu Chi Tunnels provide deep insights into the country’s wartime past, while the French-influenced Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Saigon Central Post Office reflect its colonial heritage. Both cities are a food lover’s paradise, offering a range of culinary delights from pho and banh mi to fresh spring rolls and Vietnamese coffee.

Natural Wonders: Ha Long Bay, Sapa, and the Mekong Delta

Vietnam’s natural beauty is as diverse as its cities. In the north, Ha Long Bay is one of the country’s most iconic landscapes, with thousands of limestone islands rising dramatically from emerald waters. Cruising through this UNESCO World Heritage site offers travelers a chance to explore hidden caves, floating fishing villages, and secluded beaches.

Further north lies Sapa, a region known for its terraced rice fields and ethnic minority villages. Trekking through Sapa’s misty mountains provides breathtaking views and opportunities to connect with the local Hmong and Dao communities. This area is ideal for those seeking adventure and cultural immersion.

In the south, the Mekong Delta is a sprawling network of rivers, swamps, and islands, often referred to as the “rice bowl” of Vietnam. Visitors can take boat tours through the delta’s narrow canals, visit floating markets, and explore small villages where life moves at a slower pace.

Central Vietnam: History and Beaches

Central Vietnam offers a perfect blend of history, culture, and relaxation. The ancient city of Hue, once the imperial capital, is home to the majestic Imperial Citadel and royal tombs. Just south of Hue, the charming town of Hoi An is famous for its well-preserved architecture, vibrant lantern-lit streets, and tailor shops. Hoi An’s Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a delightful place to explore on foot or by bicycle.

For beach lovers, Da Nang and the surrounding area boast some of Vietnam’s most beautiful coastline. My Khe Beach, with its long stretches of white sand, is perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and water sports.

When to Visit

Vietnam’s weather varies by region, but generally, the best time to visit is during the spring (February to April) and autumn (September to November). These seasons offer mild temperatures and lower humidity, making it ideal for exploring both cities and nature.

In the north, winter months (December to February) can be chilly, especially in mountainous areas like Sapa. Meanwhile, the south experiences its dry season from December to April, with warm and pleasant conditions.

Vietnam is a destination that offers something for everyone—whether you’re a history buff, nature lover, foodie, or adventure seeker. Its rich cultural tapestry, combined with stunning natural landscapes and vibrant cities, makes it a place where every day brings new discoveries. Whether you’re cruising through Ha Long Bay, savoring street food in Hanoi, or exploring the Mekong Delta, Vietnam promises an unforgettable journey filled with awe, wonder, and adventure.

Vietnam Entry Requirements

Australians traveling to Vietnam must meet specific entry requirements before their trip. Australian passport holders need a visa to enter Vietnam, unless they are staying for a short period under Vietnam’s visa exemption program. Currently, Australians can apply for an e-visa, which allows for a single-entry stay of up to 30 days and can be obtained online through the Vietnamese government’s official website [visa].

The passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the date of entry, and travelers should ensure they have at least one blank page for visa stamps. For longer stays or multiple entries, Australians may need to apply for a visa through a Vietnamese embassy or consulate.

Additionally, it’s important for travelers to monitor any updates on health or COVID-19 requirements, such as proof of vaccination or testing, as these can vary. Travel insurance is highly recommended to cover medical expenses, accidents, or trip cancellations.  This can be done by referring to Smartraveller.gov.au

Health & Safety Tips

Here are some safety tips specifically tailored you while we travel in:

1. Be Aware of Your Surroundings

- Stay alert in busy areas like markets and tourist spots, where pickpocketing, bag slashing and snatch-and-grab theft can happen. Keep your belongings close, and hold bags and backpacks in front of you on on the opposite side to the traffic to make them harder to steal.

- Avoid carrying too much cash. Use hotel safes for valuables and passports.

- Travellers have been robbed withdrawig money from ATMs.  Credit and debit card fraud and card skimming happen across Vietnam.  Only use ATMs in banks and shopping centres.  Always keep your credit card in sight.

2. Cross the Road with Caution

- Traffic can be chaotic, especially in Hanoi. Cross streets slowly and steadily; motorbikes will generally move around you. Follow locals when crossing to get a sense of timing.

3. Stay Hydrated and Sun-Protected

- Vietnam's climate can be humid, so drink plenty of water. Carry a water bottle, especially when sightseeing outdoors.

- Wear sunscreen, a hat, and light clothing to protect yourself from the sun.

4. Be Mindful of Health

- Bring any necessary medications with you, as certain prescriptions may not be readily available.

- Be cautious with street food. While Vietnamese food is delicious, choose clean and busy food stalls or stick to restaurants to avoid potential food-borne illnesses.

- If you have any dietary restrictions, inform restaurant staff ahead of time.

6. Be Respectful in Temples

- When visiting religious sites like temples and pagodas, dress modestly (cover your shoulders and knees).

- Remove your shoes when entering temples and always follow local customs.

7. Avoid Nighttime Wandering On Your Own

- While Vietnam is generally safe, it’s better to avoid walking alone in poorly lit or unfamiliar areas at night. Stick to well-trafficked areas, and travel in groups when possible.

8. Scams and Tourist Traps

- Be cautious of overly friendly strangers offering unsolicited services, like guided tours or cheap transportation. Stick to reputable tour companies and confirmed bookings.

- When shopping in markets, practice polite bargaining, but beware of being overcharged as a foreigner.

9. Emergency Contacts

- Always have a copy of your passport and key documents with you, and keep digital copies stored online.

- In case of an emergency, you can dial 113 for police, 115 for medical assistance, and 114 for fire services.

These safety measures will help ensure that your trip through Vietnam is smooth, enjoyable, and secure!

Weather and What to Pack

In September, the weather in northern and central Vietnam begins transitioning from summer to autumn. In the north, particularly in areas like Hanoi and Sapa, the temperatures start to cool down, with average highs around 28-30°C (82-86°F) and more comfortable evenings around 20-22°C (68-72°F). However, it can still be humid, and occasional rain showers are common. Central Vietnam, including cities like Hue and Da Nang, remains warmer with highs of around 30-32°C (86-90°F), but this region also experiences increased rainfall due to the approaching monsoon season.

For women over 55 traveling during this time, it’s wise to pack light, breathable clothing for the daytime, such as cotton or linen, along with a waterproof jacket or poncho for sudden rain. Comfortable walking shoes with good grip are essential for exploring, particularly in wetter conditions. A light sweater or shawl may also be useful for cooler evenings or air-conditioned indoor spaces. Accessories like a wide-brimmed hat and sunscreen are recommended for sun protection.
