SPAINS CATALONIA REGION – With glorious hills and sparkling Mediterranean coastline, the Spanish region of Catalonia ticks all the boxes for a cycling paradise. Catalonia is because of this, one of the world’s most popular cycling destinations
First held in 1911, the prestigious Volta a Catalunya is the fourth oldest stage race on the calendar. You will be cycling in much of the area used for this classic race, from the coast up into les Gavarres
Tucked away in the northeastern corner of Catalonia, the Costa Brava stretches from the French border all the way to Barcelona., with a treasure trove of fishing villages and lively seaside towns. Plus the mighty hills of Les Gavarres behind it, where we spend most of our time.
A great tour for those who love variety and like to combine different landscapes. Mountains, coast, agricultural fields and medieval settlements. All of this, combined with excellent Mediterranean food, and great moments in the sunshine. No wonder so many cyclists like coming to this area. Its renowned for its superb routes and scenery.
This is a small hotel/B&B based holiday. Prices are based on sharing in twin rooms.
Single Supplement for this tour is £450. If opting to share, this must be with a friend or partner. If no one else is prepared to share with someone wanting a twin room, then the single supplement is payable. Ideally you should sign up with a friend to enable you to share a twin room. ACT is reluctant to allow strangers to share a twin room.
Flying into Barcelona, we will make our way north east through the Parc del Montnegre i el Corredor. A small range of hills set immediately in from the coastline.
On the first day we will be making our way to Lloret de Mar and Tossa de Mar. Two vibrant little towns with the Massís de Cadiretes immediately behind, which we will be exploring. Its a mountain preserve area with winding, scenic roads with awesome ocean views.
Then we will be cycling along the beautiful setting of the road between Tossa de Mar and Sant Feliu de Guíxols. Enjoy pedalling amid the green and silver holm oaks and the turquoise coves of the authentic Costa Brava, against the constant backdrop of the Mediterranean Sea. A regular route on the Volta a Catalunya.
From then on, the rest of the tour is spent in the hills around Girona. Its a beautiful area regularly frequented by the many professional cyclists living in this area, and the Volta a Catalunya. This is les Gavarres. A mountain range in the northern end of the Catalan Coastal Range and was recognized as an area of great importance and declared Area of Natural Interest in December 1992. Its a great cycling area. Here the most important Catalonian cork oaks and maritime pine forests are located, with forests made up of alders, hazels and chestnuts.
Our days are short though, 50 to 60 miles, and through the most beautiful parts. Approximately 360 miles with around 30,000 ft of climbing. I rate it as a 7/10. Another great way to start your summer cycling season !
