About this trip

Explore the coast of Mazatlan on a mission to meet up close and personal with one of earth´s most fascinating creatures: the humpback whale. Take part on our whale ecology project and learn about their lives while supporting its study and conservation in Mexico.

MUNBA Expeditions is a Joint Venture between the new Museo Nacional de la Ballena (National Whale Musaeum -MUNBA-) and Onca Explorations, Mazatlan´s experts in whale ecology and pioneers in whale watching! for providing the best whale watching experience possible in Mazatlan!

Exploration for Conservation

Led by dedicated marine experts aboard a high-speed, semi-rigid vessel, adventurers of all ages will embark on an unforgettable journey that’s as thrilling as it is safe.  With outstanding commentary about local environment and sharing real-time insight into whales’ ecology and behavior while collecting scientific data, and an internationally certified vessel, our team  its committed to providing you with the ultimate, carefree experience on the water.

During our encounters we may observe whales spouting while cruising along, or powerfully breaching and tail slapping while playing or fighting. It is breeding season in the Mexican Pacific so there is a lot going on! If lucky enough, we may find females nursing their calves, or maybe listen to the intriguing songs performed by males as part of their courtship ritual.

By taking part on this expedition you are contributing directly to marine research and monitoring activities led by the National Whale Museum (MUNBA) and its allies for the conservation of whales and dolphins in this important region of the Mexican Pacific and Gulf of California.

We booked a private tour to the Chara Pinta Reserve, which was a splurge for us, but worth every penny! Having an opportunity to enjoy the Sierra Madre Occidental pine-oak habitat, see numerous endemic birds, and be invited for lunch in a local home was a truly special experience. Ciro from ONCA spoke excellent English (and was subjected to my sketchy Spanish), and was very knowledgeable about numerous naturalist topics. I am glad to know that the cost of this trip helps fund ONCA's mission as well as the El Palmito community. I hope that both ONCA and the community of El Palmito are successful in gaining a national protection designation for this special area. Touring the area is the best way to support it: if eco-tourism creates a greater financial gain than extractive land uses, these threatened species can be protected even as the ejido community is supported. Tip: I found WhatsApp vs. email to be the best way to reach out with any questions before booking. If I find myself in Mazatlan again, I will absolutely book another ONCA experience.

We absolutely loved our marine safari! Ciro was a wonderful guide and we were able to swim with turtles and saw several dolphins, a manta ray, and marlins. It was a great experience and we would definitely do it again!
