About this trip

Rediscover nature!

Get away from the city and stay in a forest where elephants roam. Experience nature up close in our hideaway ecolodge, located some 14km from civilization.  An undiscovered gem, Ulu Muda is one of the largest continuous forests in peninsular Malaysia

We currently offer departures from Penang. From there, we can arrange a private transfer for you to the jetty. Then your jungle adventure will begin, as you travel up the Ulu Muda River in a traditional sampan boat for about an hour. You will stay at an eco-lodge in the area of Kuala Labua. The lodge also serves as a research station to help preserve this rich habitat and the services it provides.

You can stay a minimum of 2 nights or a maximum of 4 nights. All your activities will be accompanied by an experienced jungle guide and conservationist. The schedule of your activities can be adapted to your preference.

Some of the activities you can experience include visits to salt licks, wildlife watching, swimming and frolicking in cold forest streams,  visiting a limestone hill and its mysterious caves, and watching birds and other wildlife. You can also just laze around the lodge grounds listening to nature's music and being awakened by the haunting call of the White-handed Gibbons.

Facilities

All our rooms are twin rooms with a private bathroom (shower, modern toilet) and a charming balcony overlooking the jungle. The beds are traditional Malay style on a low platform with bedding provided.

There are also larger rooms available that can serve as dormitories for up to 6 people (camp bed, sleeping bag, and air pillow provided).

Food

All meals and snacks are provided by our local team, but you are welcome to bring your own food or nibbles to feel at home.

We can cater to vegetarians, vegans, and other dietary needs, but need advance notice. Please tell us when you book your trip.

Please note that we do not serve alcoholic drinks. Again, you are free to bring your own drinks and refreshments.

Great trip, many thanks to Hymeir. Really hidden gem, there were no people at all! Only sounds of nature. I hope it will remain hidden. We could not see the elephants, only heard them, so we need to come one more time.

Eye-opening experience, really got to experience living with the bare essentials. Got to see some really beautiful reefs and learnt a lot about the conservation work that is being done + got to help out in their conservation work.

This is a life changing experience. The people who work at Batu Kapal are some of the nicest, kindest people I have ever met. Without getting too mystical, there is a purity here that is sadly missing in the Western world. Although diving in headlong to every activity can be tough it is so worth it - not just the opportunity to see orangutan, macaque, langurs, butterflies, birds, lizards etc but also the sense of community that is gained from working hard towards a common goal. I am 57 and managed! You will feel incredibly sweaty, hot, bitten and tired but you will also feel fulfilled, lucky, wondrous and joyful all at the same time. Book it now or at least donate to help buy the 5 missing hectares that will create a land corridor to the National Park and keep the orangutan here.
By Fern C for Sumatra Wildlife Volunteer on Mar 14, 2024
Dear Fern, Thanks so much for this glowing review. We are so happy that you found your volunteering visit to Batu Kapal so inspiring. You are right that this place is worth saving, not just because of the unique animals but also the amazing people in the local community. We will continue our efforts to help them protect the national park and the surrounding wildlife corridors!
