About this trip

Join Women Who Explore for an unforgettable adventure through one of the best canyon-backpacking destinations in the world, Paria Canyon, and as a bonus, this trail ends in the longest slot canyon in the world, Buckskin Gulch, which is a tributary to Paria Canyon.

Your adventure begins in Page, Arizona with a couple days to relax and explore the area. Then over the course of 5 days and 4 nights, marvel at the views as we wander 40 miles through this stunning canyon visiting places like Wrather Arch, one of the largest natural arches in the area. We will also pass by lots of petroglyphs from Native Americans who left their mark here years ago.

With only 20 overnight visitors allowed per day, this experience will give you a challenge and time to enjoy solitude and the stunning nature that surrounds you. This is truly a special place where sisterhood and nature's grandeur unite for an experience like no other.

Please note special considerations for this trip. Please note that much of this trip requires walking directly in the Paria River, and the condition of the river bottom is changing constantly from rainy weather and flash floods. When this occurs, mud and quicksand make hiking more difficult for several days after a flood. April, May, and June are the months with the lowest chance of flooding. Still, flash floods can happen any time of year, and we will only enter the canyon if it’s safe.

This is a very strenuous trip and requires a Class 3 scramble out of Buckskin Gulch on the last day. This is not for anyone with a strong fear of heights.

Total distance: 40 miles. Total elevation gain: 1,827’.

I had a wonderful time. I felt safe the entire time and cared for. The pace was pretty fast but the accommodations were very nice and I felt like everything was taken care of and had to think about very little.

Our leader, Krystyna, was the most amazing leader ever….so caring and caregiving. She gave each and everyone of us individualized attention to make sure we were having the best experience, given our various abilities and health conditions that came up along the trek. For me personally, it was my first trek in altitude and she took special care to support me. Here are a few examples - I was so exhausted after the 2nd day where we hiked to 15,200 ft in altitude then down over 10+ hours that I couldn’t go to dinner. She was so concerned that she prioritized me to prepare a plate for me and brought it to my room while the rest of the group dug into to dinner. I developed Edema in my calves and ankles so she kept checking in on me. There are too many examples like these to put in this review. If you are lucky enough to have Krystyna as your leader, you are blessed!!! For Women Who Explore organization, this trek should not be labeled as Moderate in terms of challenge. The vertical ascent to 13,200 ft on day 1, 15,200 ft on day 2, and (for those afraid of heights) the extensive cliff side walks and suspension bridge parts of the trek were very difficult even with conditioning. Very few of us have trekked before in altitude and would have the opportunity to train in that type of altitude or able to train to ascend so much in altitude. I think there should be more descriptive language in the details of the trek that you put out. Overall , I’m so happy and proud to have done this but, as someone afraid of heights, that was a surprise.

Very challenging in the best way! If you didn’t have the stamina or altitude effected you, there were enjoyable options to get you through the trek. The food was outstanding! We ate soooooo well! Multi course meals on the trail! What?!? I’ve never had it better. There was also a lot of cultural immersion. I learned a lot about Peruvian history. Loved it! Our trip leader and guides were the best.

Had a fabulous time. The host Alana was great. Everything was very well organized. We have plenty of snacks and breakfast /lunch items. Had coffee made every morning and even made some eggs. Had suggestions for free time. Few suggestions for future trips. Would like more than 1 hour for the bike ride. Can eliminate the cider hollow was way too crowded and not much for seeing cider making. Maybe try Stowe cider. Do the gondola ride in the morning, it got very crowded in the afternoon. Avoid downtown Stowe on the weekend, it was very crowded and parking was awful.

What an absolutely incredible experience on the Riviera Maya + Whale Shark adventure. Felt so connect to the culture in the area with our incredible guide! Also getting the perks of knowing to go to the tulum ruins early in the morning before the rush as well as the local cenotes. I will absolutely do another trip.

I completed my first real hiking experience - the Salkantay trek - Peru. Not only was this an experience I’ll never forget (for so many different reasons) but it was by far one of the best experience challenging me mentally, physically and spiritually. The ambassadors (Amanda & Krys) were phenomenal as were our three Peruvian guides. The group was uniquely fabulous and supportive. The accommodations, food and treks ranked 15 out of 10. This was a much needed adventure for me and I am so very glad I participated. Thank you to all who coordinated and took part in such a great experience.

Best decision I ever made! I felt like a crazy person when I first booked this trip because who books a trip to Mexico with 9 strangers?? This trip was everything I needed! I made 9 friends and came home filled with confidence knowing that once “scary” things were now in my comfort zone. I tell everyone I ever meet about WWE and will 1000% be booking another trip with them. Our tour guide was so kind and took care of all us and made us feel comfortable. The trip was so well organized and left plenty of room for us to explore on our own, or add new things to the itinerary. We learned so much about the local culture, cuisine, agriculture and more with our local guide who was a friend by the end of the trip, and all 10 of us were crying when it was time to say goodbye. If you are considering a trip with WWE, just do it. You’re going to have an incredible time.
