About this trip

This 7-day conservation tour features the Wounaan-led Christmas Bird Count and focuses on the fantastic birdlife of the Indigenous Wounaan territories of eastern Panama. Panama’s Darien province, bordering Colombia, is known as a home for many avian regional specialties and a stronghold for rare Neotropical birds. Darien is home to Harpy and Crested eagles, Blue Cotingas, Red-throated Caracaras, Capped Herons, Great Jacamars, and King Vultures. Other species, such as Golden-headed Manakin, Black Oropendola, Spot-crowned Barbet, Gray-cheeked Nunlet, Rusty-winged Antwren, White-headed Wren and so much more await you in Panama. This is a unique opportunity to watch and enjoy birds and other wildlife with Indigenous Wounaan guides.

Your participation in this tour supports Indigenous Wounaan communities to protect 350,000+ acres of bird habitat in eastern Panama.

Domi was all I could ask for in a guide - punctual, knowledgeable, prepared and friendly. I was especially pleased that he had a Plan B in case it rained. Thankfully the weather cooperated. Domi found many birds I had never seen or heard before in an area of the pipeline not visited by the large groups. We were fortunate to view most through his scope. Like many birders who are enthusiastic about their work he knows a lot about the natural world and has many stories to share. Also the promised water and snacks were provided (unlike the last company I birdied with in PC). This was important because departure time was far to early for breakfast. I would definitely hire Domi again and have booked a second Birding Tour with Whitehawk in Boquete.

Incredibly professional, warm and kind staff. Especially our tour guide, Michael. Despite us being budding birdwatchers (no hot list, but a tremendous love of birds and wildlife), Michael was able to find beautiful birds, teach us about their songs and food, as well as showing us the diverse wildlife, from capybaras to caimans to howler monkeys. It was a hot, humid day for us Seattleites, yet Michael kept us involved, fascinated and thrilled throughout the excursion. He brought great snacks, plenty of water, and even chilled pineapple that he grew himself on his farm. He offered us binoculars and brought along a scope that kept our teenagers interested -- and learning -- about the wildlife and how they could take the best photos for their Instagram accounts. I can't imagine a better trip or a better introduction to the rainforest of Panama, than this. We'll definitely book with Whitehawk again.
