About this trip

These majestic late classic period sites are rightly popular with our guests.

Our guide meets you at your hotel in San Ignacio town and drives to CAHAL PECH maya site.

Cahal Pech settled in a very unique jungle setting, surrounded by the ever popular San Ignacio Town, offers you a very tranquil and lovely setting with numerous private plazas and ceremonial structures and temples. This once very influential Maya site was built overlooking the Macal River and had access to trading routes on the Mopan River Valley and was known to Xunantunich and Buena Vista, two very important powerful and influential Maya sites

Cahal Pech & Xunantunich are late classic periods maya sites whose history date back to the mid to late preclassic period and whose political influence in/to the small neighbouring  mayan  in ancient time provided and enhanced their power - each in its own polity.

Xunantunich is built upon a ridge overlooking the upper reaches of the Mopan river, it commands a spectacular view of the surrounding countryside. The site core is dominated by the 130 foot high ‘El Castillo” Xunantunich has had the highest structures within this area as its temple towers over the valley, like an eagle's eye over the small communities that served them. Your adventure includes a guided tour of the site which will often include some of the sites wildlife such as the iconic howler monkeys.

The best hours to enjoy these sites are in the early part of the day or mid afternoon to closing hours (2:30 – 4:00), since at these hours wildlife is happily enjoying the coolest part of the day or getting ready to end their diurnal life. Nothing like having these sites almost to yourself and to be inspired by there great scenery and private courtyards only unique to these sites and yet so close to civilization.

We booked directly with St. Leonard’s tours based on great reviews and our experience was phenomenal! Our guide was Jose and we booked the Horse Riding, Xunantunich & Chocolate Making tour. Jose was a fantastic guide, making sure my 10 year-old daughter and I had a truly remarkable and fun experience. His knowledge of everything from wildlife, plants, Mayan history, and more, was unmatched. Bonus- he was also a great photographer😄

We had an amazing time. Elio was a fantastic guide. He helped us navigate all of the Mayans ruins and was phenomenal during the cave tubing, highly recommended Elio and St Leonard’s.

Reuben was an amazing guide. He was super nice and knowledgeable. He spent extra time showing us Jaguar’s Paw cave and telling us about Belize’s history, ecology, and general info. We were picked up in Belize City and Reuben basically drove us over the whole country. It was more expensive ($225 each) but definitely worth it. We want to come back to do a full day cave exploration with Reuben.

We had planned this as a private your for my daughter's 6th birthday. It was very hot, so at their suggestion, we were able to change to a farm and jungle ride only followed by a separate ruins tour. This worked out much better given the heat, and allowed us to really enjoy the ruins without worrying about having to ride the horses back when we were done. I appreciated their flexibility and ability to make the tours interesting and accessible to our whole family and to keep my daughter engaged the whole time. We left with her still wanting more, which was great.
