About this trip

This is not your typical yoga retreat. Join post-lineage Collective Rest guides for a journey into healing, indulgence, and ancestral repair.

The end of the year is what the Celts knew as on the back end of giamos. We have just exited the winter solstice and experienced the longest night and are just on the cusp of a tangible shift towards equinox. This darkness creates a metaphorical and literal moment when what is in front of us is obscured causing us to live in the inbetween - inbetween the visible and invisible worlds, past/present/future, here and there. This threshold begs us to mine its wisdom so that new realities can be created and brought forth into the light. This retreat is an embrace of the inbetween, of liminal space, and holding the discomfort that arises in the unknown while engaging in radical imagining of what could be. It is an exploration of the hard and soft edges that have been created in the geography, culture, and self, compelling us to examine their impact in our lives and our ancestors' lives.

The indigenous heritage of Spain includes that of the Celts, the Iberians, and other nomadic groups. Its complicated history is colored by Romanization and Christianity, Africanization and Islam, colonization, literature and Judaism.

Spain offers physical locations with complex histories that produce palpable aftershocks both in the metaphysical sense when you are visiting and in a literal sense in world history. All too often, we focus on the physical and literal spaces, missing the wisdom and healing offered by tapping into the land that has seen and persists despite these histories. Somatic practices, yoga nidra, and rest in and out of affinity group sessions offer portals through which we can tap into the wisdom that sits in these places, metabolize how they are imprinted on our DNA, and imagine what it looks like to live without the weight and scars. Just as the inbetween reminds of reality as existing beyond binary thought, this retreat is not a somber descent into ancestral healing. Instead, somatic abolition leads us to collective liberation and pure joy where we celebrate the connection and resilience of peoples by indulging the fabulous food, drink, and artistic expressions of this complex and beautiful country.

Who is this retreat for?

This experience is for the adventurer who wants to explore yoga beyond shapes, and desires applying yoga philosophy and somatic practices to cultivate embodiment, abolition and generational healing.

That is, this trip is for the yogi with a nomadic, intercultural spirit who's a little nerdy; the thinker that understands the interconnected nature of the awe, beauty, and pain of places like these; and the seeker who embraces deeper awareness and healing for themselves and others.

This Solstice Retreat at Lake Atitlan was my fourth retreat with Tamika. I LOVE her retreats, especially in Spanish-speaking locations! Her background includes teaching Spanish professionally and she effortlessly weaves in learning about the culture and history of the country in an authentic and respectful way. For Guatemala, we got to experience a Mayan Fire Ceremony with a local Indigenous healer, indulge in a gentle Temazcal sweat lodge and Cacao ceremony. You're consistently being invited into ceremony which raises each moment into a heightened spiritual experience if you're looking for it. With any of Tamika's retreats there will be some adventure, maybe a few uncomfortable moments (winding mountain roads make me queasy!) and it will all be worth it. We journeyed across Lake Atitlan in water taxis and stayed at Villa Sumaya, a maze-like eco-palace accessible by boat built into the volcanic mountainside. This place is stunning (and she's going back in 2025!). The lake and surrounding volcanoes are mesmerizingly gorgeous (every room seems to have a stunning view) and the beautiful architectural design of the villa is surrounded by lush flora. It was rainy season when we went but that made it more vibrant, more verdant. It was an invitation to rest which is one of the tenets of Tamika's approach to yoga. Tamika will hold space for you in so many ways (you can relax knowing that logistics have been carefully curated and researched and the yoga will be LEGIT whether more active but accessible yang or a delicious inspiring yin). She is always honing her craft and you will receive some world-class yoga, skillfully adapted from world-class teachers and workshops because she is consistently in the study of yoga. Another benefit of these retreats are the people - deep connections will form at the dining table. You will be inspired! You will be encouraged! You may quit your job and follow your dreams! Also a plus yummy vegetarian food and lots of unstructured time to be in self-study, community or deep-rest is built in. Villa Sumaya has a slate of wellness experts available to you from Astrology, Reiki, massage and more. Do yourself a favor and book a retreat with Tamika. You won't regret it and maybe it will change your life!

We had a great time. We were well taken care of in our lovely room. The food and yoga was excellent. The ceremonies were opening and enlightening. The sweat lodge and the cacao ceremony were my favorites. The architecture and layout of Villa Sumaya it's very beautiful and picturesque.

What a fantastic trip! From the arrival to the departure I felt cared for. The experiences we shared there were ones I’ll take with me for a long long while. From the amazing new friends to the reconnection with old ones, Tamika knows just how to cultivate a group. So so happy I joined.

I had a wonderful experience on this trip with Tamika! Everything from the airport transfers, accommodations, food, yoga practices, ceremonies and healers were well planned , thoughtfully chosen, and nourishing for the mind, body, and spirit! I would definitely participate in a retreat led by Tamika again.

I had the most amazing time on this retreat. Yoga everyday and the opportunity to experience other amazing modalities in a tropical paradise. Although we encountered lots of rain, it was refreshing and cleansing for my soul. Tamika is one of the most incredible human beings I have ever known. The privilege of learning from her in an intimate group setting is priceless. The food, fellowship and fun were top tier experiences. I am ready to place my deposit for her next offering. I have been home for two days and I still feel uplifted.
